Shougang Institute of Technology was founded in 1978. Its predecessor was the Beijing Iron and Steel Institute Branch. It was approved by the Ministry of Education. Prior to 1999, the college was awarded the bachelor's degree in mechanical design and manufacturing, steel metallurgy, metal pressure processing, industrial automation, construction engineering and industrial trade, mainly for the training of undergraduates. After 1999, with the vigorous development of China's higher vocational education, the college has established the goal of cultivating high-tech applied talents with distinctive characteristics and started to hold higher vocational education. In recent years, the college has insisted on “improving the level, focusing on quality, developing characteristics, and increasing efficiency” and striving to build a first-class vocational college.

The college has economic management department, computer department, mechanical and electrical engineering department, architecture and environmental engineering department, basic department and adult education college. There are 25 higher vocational education majors such as marketing and planning, environmental monitoring and governance technology, and 8 adult undergraduate degree education majors such as organic electricity integration technology and business enterprise management. There are nearly 3,600 full-time high-school students and more than 3,000 adult education students. Each year, the company trains 20,000 people at all levels.

The college covers an area of 167,535 square meters, with a construction area of 91,237 square meters. The construction area of the internship and experimental site is 25,074 square meters. It has a 400-meter standard environmental rubber track stadium and various ball training venues. It has a modern training facility such as a training center, a student computer room, a professional classroom, a laboratory, a network center, and a library with a collection of more than 294,000 books. It has complete supporting facilities such as standardized canteens, and the conditions for running schools are among the best in Beijing.
