Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (YUTCM), established in 1960, is among the second group of TCM universities set up nationwide. It was approved as the master's degree authorization unit in 1986 and its undergraduate teaching is rated as “Excellence” in the teaching-quality assessment by the Ministry of Education ofChina in 2007. It is also listed as the Doctoral project construction unit in 2008. Yunnan University of TCM basically offers disciplines about traditional Chinese medicine, with such disciplines asmedicine, science, engineering and management developing as well. Therein, bachelor’s programs make up the main proportion, and master’s programs, continuing education and international education come next and play an indispensable part in the development of YUTCM as a university of traditional Chinese medicine.

 The number of teaching and administrative staff in the university is 857, of which, 591 are full-time teachers and 172 are of PhD degree. In the main campus there are experts and scholars well-known in China and in Yunnan province, covering1 outstanding contribution expert of the State Council,5 experts enjoying special government allowances ofthe State Council, 8 national famous-experienced TCM “academy inheritance” elder instructors,2 provincial famous-experienced TCM “doctor guiding apprentice”instructors, 3 provincial outstanding experts, 5 experts enjoying special provincial government allowances, 11 provincial honorary famousTCM doctorsand famous TCM doctors,7 provincial middle-aged and young academic technological leaders and reserved talented experts,1 perspective provincial talents for technological innovation, 2 provincial excellent middle-aged and young leaders for traditional Chinese medicine, 12 doctoral supervisors, 2 cooperative postdoctoral mentors in national inheritance of traditional Chinese medicine, 1 Yunnan Outstanding Scholar, 1 Yunnan Outstanding Teacher and 2 Yunnan Outstanding Doctors.

The university with two campuses covers a total area of 763.20 Mu (about 126 acres), Chenggong Campus 730.33 Mu (about 120 acres) and Baita Campus 32.87 Mu (about 6 acres). Its construction area is 273,000 square meters. The university has 10 faculties, 2 public course teaching departments and 2 teaching auxiliary departments. Now there are 17 key construction disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 7 provincial key disciplines, 2 provincial key disciplines with advantage and characteristics, 2 Class-A doctoral programs set up by Yunnan province in the project construction of the Twelfth Five-year Plan. Besides, it has 4 Class-A master programs (including 25 Class-B programs) and 4 professional master programs. The university owns 21 undergraduate majors, among which there are 2 national characteristic specialties, 1 national pilot major for comprehensive reform, 5 provincial key and characteristic specialties, and 3 provincial experimental majors for comprehensive reform. Furthermore, there are 17 excellent courses, 3 excellent open video courses, 2 bilingual language model teaching courses, 2 excellent courses taught in languages of Southeast Asia and South Asia, 5 teaching teams, 9 distinguished teachers, 8 distinguished teacher studios, 1 distinguished teacher of colleges and universities for high-level talent supporting plan, 2 perspective provincial brilliant engineers, 17 Twelfth Five-year Plan textbooks, 3 top-quality textbooks, 3 experimental teaching model centers, 1 construction project for virtual simulation experiment teaching center, 1 service center for experiment, internship and practice and technological innovation, 1 construction project for prospective excellent talents, 2 program centers for practical teaching improvement and 1 innovation experimental area for talent cultivation.

The university is the pilot unit for the national educational information and the provincial information center for traditional Chinese medicine and national medicine. The library collection is 790,000 volumes, with 18,000 ancient spiral-bound books, 36 TB electronic resources and 25 Chinese-foreign language databases. The information resources possessed by the university covers 118 medical practice bases in Yunnan province. The school museum is also the provincial museum of traditional Chinese medicine and national medicine, the publicity center of the traditional Chinese medicine culture and the provincial base for science education.  

Since its founding in 1960, Yunnan University of TCM has produced more than 50,000 qualified talents in traditional Chinese medicine, national medicine and other fields related. Also, it has gained fruitful research achievements. All of these has well provided talents and technical support for the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Yunnan province, and contributed a lot to the health of people.

By now, YUTCM has established strong and stable relationship with universities and organizations abroad and different programs have been proceeding for many years, such as Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, Chiangrai Rajabhat University in Thailand, Pan-European Medical Consultants Society of T.C.M. in France, European Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Spain, Korean Traditional Medicinal Food Laboratory, Australia Education Management Group and so on.
