Gannan Medical University (GMU) is located in Ganzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in Jiangxi province. Organized by the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, GMU is a full-time undergraduate medical university in Jiangxi province. Professor Han Jisheng, an academician of China Science Academy, works as the honorary president of GMU. GMU was founded as Ganxian Advanced Midwifery Vocational School of Jiangxi Province in 1941, developed to Gannan Medical Technical School with College Degree authorization in 1958. And GMU was updated to an undergraduate university in 1988 and obtained the master's degree authorization in 2013.

GMU boasts Zhanggong Campus and Huangjin Campus, covering more than 2,231.25 mu (including affiliated hospitals). The total value of such equipment as teaching, scientific research and medical instruments is 2.668 billion Yuan. GMU has 1,242,000 books and 1,270,000 electronic books. GMU currently has more than 12,700 undergraduates, college students, graduates and overseas students, and 12,700 students majoring in adult education. There are more than 4,400 members (including the First, Second and Third Affiliated Hospital of GMU). Among them, there are 1,070 full-time teachers, including 162 ones with senior professional title and 367 ones with sub-senior professional title. GMU boasts 11 teachers enjoying the special allowance of the provincial and State Council government, 7 candidates of Ganpo Talent 555 Project, 1 provincial major academic leader, 5 provincial university academic leaders, 1 young scientist with title of Jinggang Star, 21 candidates of provincial Hundred-Thousand Project (Level 1&2), 6 provincial distinguished teachers, 2 provincial model teachers, 37 provincial young and middle-aged leading teachers.

Centering on medical majors, GMU coordinates the development of Science, Engineering and Sociology. GMU has developed into a local medical university with distinguished school-running characteristics and advantages. There are 23 undergraduate majors, including 2 national distinguished majors (clinical medicine sciences and anesthesiology), 4 provincial distinguished majors (preventive medicine, human movement science, nursing, public enterprise management), 5 education training programs for outstanding doctors of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, as well as more than 120 provincial education training programs for outstanding doctors, outstanding engineers, etc.

GMU has established 163 various practice teaching bases, including 3 directly affiliated hospitals and 8 indirectly affiliated ones. GMU passed the Undergraduate Clinical Medicine Sciences Attestation of MOE in October, 2013. Until 2017, the passing rate of the National Medical Licensing Examination for the Clinical Medicine Sciences majors’ graduates of GMU was higher than the national average level over the past 12 continuous years.

GMU adheres to the aim of serving the regional economic development based on scientific research. GMU has formed its own characteristics and advantages in the fields of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular pharmacology, acupuncture analgesia, study on pathogenicity of blastocystis, modern treatment of urinary calculi, cardiac intervention and direct vision surgery, prevention and treatment of cataract and minimally invasive surgery by using the regional resources advantages and combining with the characteristics of the discipline, making a number of landmark achievements. Over the past few years, GMU undertook hundreds of the research of Chinese nature science foundation projects, Chinese social science foundation projects and scientific research projects of provincial ministries and commissions. Academic articles are published by Cell, European Urology and Nature Communications. Until now, GMU has cultivated 60,000 medical graduates and 71.4% of them are working in various hospitals, which they have become the backbones in the hospitals concerned.

GMU takes the initiative to do exchange and cooperation home and abroad, and has established a cooperative relationship with Lincoln Memorial University, Daegu Haang University, Health Center of University of North Texas, Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin and other foreign universities and medical institutions. It began to recruit overseas students in 2005, and foreign students and graduates were sent to Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India and Philippines since 2007. GMU actively hosted the China-Germany Hospital Management Forum, China-Australia Cataract Blindness Project, the National Children's Cancer Seminar, Rural Targeted-area Medical Students’ Cultivation Seminar etc.
