Introduction to Shihezi University

Shihezi University is ranked among the key constructed universities under the “211 project” and also a key institution to develop in northwestern China. It is co-constructed by Ministry of Education and  Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and also be selected into the Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project (one university one province).

The university predecessor was founded on People’s Liberation Army’s way to liberate Xinjiang in September of 1949, and was combined and constructed in April of 1996 by Shihezi Agricultural College originally for Ministry of Agriculture Subordinate University, Shihezi Medical School, Corps Normal College and Corps Economic School.

Shihezi University offers 11 specialties--Economics, Law, Education, Literature ,History, Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management and Art. The university has 5 first-level Doctor conferrable spots covering 25 second-level Doctor conferrable spots, 23 first-level Master’s conferrable spots with 144 related second-level Master’s conferrable spots, 9 authorization categories for Master’s degree, 84 bachelor’s degree programs, 4 post-doctoral mobile stations(scientific research station). Shihezi University has 1 national key discipline and 1 national key (foster) discipline, 13 provincial key disciplines and 1 provincial key (foster) discipline, 3 state-level teaching teams and 1 nationally outstanding teacher, 4 national top quality courses, 5 featured specialties, 1 experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 bi-lingual model courses, 3 Ministry of Education high-quality video courses, 1 state-level resource sharing course, 326 national college innovation and entrepreneurship training programs. The university has national college base for culture-oriented quality-education, off-campus educational practice base and also among the experimental universities for outstanding educational training programs of Ministry of Education (doctors, engineers and specialists for agriculture and forestry).

Shihezi University insists on Enterprises-universities-researches Integration, developing subject advantages at comprehensive majors and applicability and gains breakthrough at research areas with regional advantages and features, such as efficient agriculture and ecology in oasis and desert region, animal genetic improvement and disease control, Xinjiang local and national high incidence disease prevention and treat, Xinjiang agricultural products efficient storage and processing, Xinjiang special plant medicine resources and development, chemical green technology and new material technology, Xinjiang-featured agricultural mechanization technology and equipment, military corps economical and social development etc. In recent years, Shihezi University has hosted 2 national “973 Plan” programs, 3 national “963 Plan” subjects, 6 national technology supporting plan programs,4 national philosophy and social science significant tender projects, gained more than 300 scientific and research results and awarded more than 200 prized at the provincial level or above. The university has 2 state key laboratory bases co-founded by Xinjiang and Ministry, 2 key laboratories co-founded by Xinjiang and Ministry of Education, 2 Ministry of Education Engineering Centers, 1 national and local joint project research centers, 1 national and local joint project laboratory, 8 corps key laboratories, 3 corps engineering technology research centers, 4 corps collaboration innovation centers (foster), 4 autonomous region key laboratories, 4 autonomous region and corps key research bases for liberal arts(also key scientific research bases).

Shihezi University,with total area of 1 820 000 square meter, school building area of 1 170 000 square meters, lab area of 150 000 square meters and green coverage rate 43%, holds good conditions for teaching and scientific research, and also have perfect facilities,such as library, gymnasium, natatorium, track and field training hall,standard stadium, hall, comprehensive teaching building and 4 affiliated hospitals. Shihezi University won the title of “National Civilized Unit” in 2011.

Shihezi University has 2550 staff, 1665 full-time teacher, including 2 Distinguished Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 “Changjiang Scholars Program” Distinguished Professors, 187 professors and 556 associate professors. It has 2 innovative teams of Ministry of Education, 1 was selected into”Innovative Talents Promotion Project” young and middle-aged science and technology innovation leading talents by Ministry of Science and Technology, 13 into “New Century Talent Supporting Project ” by Ministry of Education, 3 into National Talents Project, 4 into Thousand Youth Project--Xinjiang Program, 72 won the title of young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions by national or provincial (ministry) level and 89 enjoyed special government allowances  successively.

Shihezi University enrolls students from 31 provinces (city\region), on-campus students of 40185, including 22576 college students, 482 national defense students, 3735 graduates and keeps undergraduate employment rate above 90%. In recent year, Shihezi University has been honored the title of “National Colleges Graduates Employment Advanced Group” ”50 Typical Experience Universities for Graduate Employment”etc.

Shihezi University develops international exchange and cooperation widely, sets up International Education Center and Confucius Institute in Kazakhstan, carries out multi-layered and wide-ranging exchange and cooperation with more than 40 universities and scientific and research institutions,such as the USA, Russia, White Russia,Kazakhstan,  Kyrgyzstan,New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Austria, Japan and Korea.

Shihezi University expands exchange and cooperation with other universities, local government and enterprises actively and get partner assistance from university work team with Peking University as leader unit, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, East China University of Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University as vice-leader unit, Chongqing University, Jiangnan University, University of International Business and Economics, Nanjing Normal University and South China Agricultural University as member units. Shihezi University has signed inner-college cooperation agreements with more than 20 domestic universities, college-local cooperation agreements with corps and autonomous region enterprises, college-enterprise cooperation agreements with Xinjiang Tianye, Tianfu, Yilite, Tianshan Lvye.

Riding on the spring breeze of revitalizing mid-western colleges and comprehensively deepen reforming in Xinjiang Corps, Shihezi University is moving towards establishing advanced in western regions, first-level in Central Asia, international well-known and featured university.
