Introduction

Ocean University of China (OUC)  is a comprehensive university with particular strengths in oceanography and  fisheries science. We have four campuses – Yushan, Fushan, Laoshan and Huangdao,  which is currently under construction – all of which are united under our motto  “Ocean embraces all streams; exploring promises reaching far.”

OUC was one of the first universities  approved to confer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees by the State Academic  Degree Committee and it now offers courses in science, engineering, agronomy  (fisheries), pharmaceutics, economics, management, liberal arts, law, education,  history, and art. In 2017 it was included in China’s plan of building “Double  First-Rate” universities, having previously also been on the list of “Project  985” universities (a list of China’s top 40 universities) and “Project 211”  institutions (of China’s top 100 universities). It is now the recipient of  significant national and provincial support and funding, which supports its bid  to become a world class university.

The university is proud to be the cradle of  China’s marine professionals and it counts a large number of China’s marine  science specialists among its alumni. 70% of China’s PhD holders in oceanography  and fisheries graduated from OUC; in addition, the first scientist to reach the  South Pole, the first Chinese scientist to investigate the South Pole on foot,  and the first Chinese scientist to reach both the North and South Poles all  graduated from OUC. OUC alumni also comprise 68% of the winners of the National  Foundation Awards for Distinguished Young Researchers in Oceanography and 46% of  the winners of the National Foundation Awards for Distinguished Young  Researchers in fisheries.

OUC boasts a number of national-level  research institutions, including the National Laboratory for Marine Science and  Technology, the Research Center for the Marine Development of China and the  National Research Center for Marine Pharmaceutical Engineering Technology. The  university is also in the top 1% of the most-cited universities and scientific  institutions in nine research fields (ESI): plant and animal science, earth  science, engineering, chemistry, agricultural sciences, materials science,  biology and biochemistry, environmental science and ecology, and pharmacology  and toxicology. As a result it is recognized as the driving force behind China’s  marine research and application.

We celebrate to a policy of open education,  and we are implementing an internationally-focused strategy. To date, the  university has established cooperative relations with over 240 universities and  research institutes in more than 37 countries and regions. In 2005, the  International Association of Marine-Related Institutions was founded at OUC with  new members and cooperative programs continuing to join its ranks every year.

OUC has strong ties with colleagues around  the world through its support of Confucius Institutes and joint research  centers. In 2005, OUC joined Sino-US 10+10, a joint program between 10 of the  best universities in China and 10 prestigious institutions in the University of  California system (US) and in 2008, the Confucius Institute in Texas was jointly  established by OUC and Texas A&M University. In addition, OUC has founded  the Center for Sino-German Cooperation in Marine Sciences, the Sino-Australian  Joint Research Centre for Coastal Management, the Sino-Korean Research Center  for Marine Development, the OUC-WHOI International Joint Research Centre and the  OUC-Auburn University Joint Research Centre for Aquiculture and Environment  Engineering. Most recently, OUC has entered into a cooperation with the ASEAN  Fisheries Education Network as a new member of ASEAN-FEN+.

The 21st century is an ocean-focused century  and, inspired by this, our goal is to develop a high-level university with  international visibility which will lay the foundations for becoming a  research-oriented university as we approach our 100th anniversary. By 2025, OUC  will be further developed into a top-level comprehensive research university  with a strong emphasis on marine sciences. Building on this, OUC will press  ahead with reform and innovation to become a world-class university with  distinct characteristics by the middle of this century. The combination of  educating the next generation of thinkers and leaders and of investing in  research supports our on-going aim of making China increasingly strong through  rapid and sustainable development.
