Outstanding International Student Scholarship Supported by the Guangdong Provincial Government at Sun Yat-sen University


In line with the notice set by the Guangdong Province Office of Education in circular No.【2015】155, the government authorities in Guangdong Province have established the “academic year 2019/2020 Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship”. 79 is the number of the scholarship quotas at Sun Yat-sen University, among which, 10 should go to PhDs, 24 to Masters and 45 to Undergraduates. 

We welcome applications from the qualified applicants. The details for this program are as follows. 

II.Application Requirements

2.1. Applicants should have a foreign citizenship, a valid passport and meet the relevant requirements of international students in China, aged under 40 years old.

2.2. Applicants should have taken more than one-year’s degree study (including one year) at Sun Yat-sen University.

2.3. Applicants should be friendly to China, healthy, law-abiding, studious, honest, and have no records of breaking Chinese laws, regulations as well as university and school rules.

2.4. Applicants should have excellent academic performances in the academic year 2019/2020, be good in compulsory courses (at least 70 points or above according to the 100 points evaluation system) and fail in no courses.

2.5. International students who have already taken or are enjoining the Chinese Government Scholarship (including Excellent Self-funded International Student supported by the Chinese government Scholarship) and other kinds of scholarship (excluding such encouraging prizes as Perfect Attendance Prize, Excellent Students Prize, etc.) are no longer entitled to apply for this scholarship.

2.6. International students who have registered during the designated period set by the university for the two semesters of academic year 2019/2020.

III.Application Materials

3.1. Application Form for Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship, a complete transcript with the official stamp from the Dean’ Office or the Graduate School should be provided. Page 4-5 which shall be filled out by the school authorities. They are mainly the major courses taken by the applicants and the evaluations, comments, opinions or recommendations from their mentors or teachers as well as the schools.

3.2. A copy of passport and valid visa.

IV.Application Deadline

All application materials should be submitted to corresponding schools before August, 20, 2019.

V. Approval Procedures

5.1. The university authorities have set up a scholarship evaluation committee consisting of the units such as Office for International Students’ Affair, Graduate School, Dean’s Office and Dean’s Office of Medical Education. The application evaluations should made by this committee. The list of qualified candidates will be submitted to the Guangdong Province Office of Education.

5.2. The final list is subject to the announcement by the Guangdong Province Office of Education after their public displays.

VI. Management and Supervision

6.1. All materials given by schools, mentors or teachers are true and correct. Otherwise, the school may be temporarily disqualified from the recommendation.

6.2. Candidates are selected via a fair, impartial and standard process.

6.3. Schools should strengthen management over scholarship students, who must be reported for breach of “Regulations on Cultivations for Foreign Graduate Students in Sun Yat-sen University” and other rules of the university to Office for International Students’ Affairs and Graduate School. Where there is a gross breach, scholarship is to be canceled.

6.4. If violating any laws or regulations of the People’s Republic of China, the scholarship student will be stripped from this scholarship and the eligibility to apply for scholarships in the future. 


2018-2019 Confucius China Studies Program-PhD Fellowships

The Confucius China Studies Program has been established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters with the aim of fostering a deeper understanding of China and Chinese culture among young generations around the world, enabling the prosperous growth of China studies, promoting the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes, and enhancing friendly relationships between China and the people of other countries. Sun Yat-sen University is one of the 16 Chinese host universities designated by the Headquarters for the Plan.

The Program consists of six subprograms in the academic areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. Two of them are to sponsor Ph.D. students.  The Ph.D. in China Fellowship aims to support foreign students in their pursuit of full-time Ph.D. degrees in the humanities and social sciences at Sun Yat-sen University. The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship aims to sponsor doctoral students (candidates) enrolled at foreign universities to come to China for study, research, and writing doctoral dissertations.

I. Ph.D. in China Fellowship

1. Purpose

To support international students who are interested in pursuing their doctoral degree at Sun Yat-sen University in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences with a focus on China. The study period is 4 years.

2. Funding

? Lodging and living stipend: 80,000 RMB per year,

? Research fund: 20,000 RMB per year,

? Round-trip international economy class airfare,

? Tuition,

? Other support provided by the host Chinese university,

? Medical insurance in China,

? Group activities and cultural experiences.

3. Eligibility

? Non-Chinese citizens under 40 years of age,

? HSK test score level 5 is required. A candidate with a higher level of Chinese proficiency would be given preference to an otherwise equally qualified candidate,

? Applicants who are currently participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship program are not eligible to apply for this Plan.

4. Application materials

? Notarized transcripts of undergraduate and graduate studies, diplomas, and copies of all the documents above in Chinese,

? HSK transcript,

? Abstract of master’s thesis and other academic publications,

? A doctoral research statement,

? Two recommendation letters from scholars in a related field,

? CCSP Application Form,

? Other documents required by the university.

? Priority is given to applicants who obtain a letter of recommendation from a Confucius Institute. 


Chinese Government Scholarship-Chinese University Postgraduate Program,Sun Yat-sen University

I.  Introduction

The “Chinese Government Scholarship –Chinese University Postgraduate Program”, a full scholarship set up by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE) in 2008, is aimed at promoting Chinese higher education brand on an international basis. Enrolment is managed directly by China’s key universities. As a key comprehensive university, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) undertakes the enrolment of international postgraduates under this government scholarship.

II.  Eligibility

1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.

2. Education background and age limit:

①Be a bachelor’s degree holder and no more than 35 when applying for the master’s programs;

②Be a master’s degree holder and no more than 40 when applying for the doctoral programs.

3. The applicant must have good scientific research ability and good knowledge of specialized courses.

4. Most of master's and doctoral programs at SYSU are taught in Chinese. In principle, the applicants should have a relevant command of Chinese proficiency.

①Those who intend to take the courses of Science, Engineering and Medical Science should have the certificate of HSK 4(with 180 points or above);

②Those who intend to take the courses of Liberal Arts, Economics and Managerial Science should have the certificate of HSK 5(with 180 points or above).

5.  The applicant must be in good behavior with no bad hobbies.

Notes:

①This scholarship is not available to students majoring in IMBA.

②This scholarship is not available to students majoring in one’s native languages or in a third-country language such as English or French etc.

Ⅲ. Scholarship Coverage

2. Accommodation:  Free on-campus accommodation.

3. Living allowance: RMB3,000/month/person for a master candidate; RMB3,500 /month/person for a doctoral candidate.

Belt and Road’ Undergraduate Scholarship Programme for International Students” (Only for recommendations by institutions)

Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) is an important base for conducting scientific research, inheriting cultural and academic traditions and training high-level talents in South China. Being one of the leading universities in China and the world as well, SYSU is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university. It enjoys a profound tradition of international cooperation and exchange in education with universities outside its home country. To improve its educational influence in the region in an overall way and to attract more students from all over the world, SYSU has set up the “Undergraduate Scholarship Programme for International Students”, in support of outstanding students from countries along the Belt and Road to pursue bachelor’s degrees at SYSU.

1. Entrance Requirements:

(1) Applicants should be non-Chinese with a valid foreign passport, and meet requirements in the “Notice of Regulating Admission of International Students in Colleges and Universities” ([2009]83).

(2) Applicants should be in good health and aged between 18 to 25 (date of birth between 1stJanuary, 1993 to 30thAugust, 2000).

(3) Applicants should be friendly towards China, law-abiding, studious and well-conducted, without any records of violation of Chinese laws, regulations or school rules.

(4) Applicants should be high school graduates, with their grades ranking among the top, or with excellence in social services, sports, music, cultural activities or leadership.

(5) Language Proficiency:

1.Liberal Arts, Economics and Managerial Science Majors: HSK 5 Certificate (with 180 points or above) or other equivalent Chinese Learning Certificates;

2.Science, Engineering and Medical Science Majors: HSK 4 Certificate (with 180 points or above) or other equivalent Chinese Learning Certificates;

3.Applicants who complete high school education with Chinese as the language of instruction should submit certificates of Chinese language proficiency issued by their schools and can be exempted from providing HSK Certificates after SYSU’s verification;

4.Outstanding applicants who apply for the programme without adequate Chinese language proficiency must take a Chinese preparatory course for one academic year. Upon the completion of the course and the satisfaction of the language entry requirements, they can begin their undergraduate studies with Chinese as the language of instruction.

(6) Applicants should obtain a recommendation letter issued by the recommendation institutions* (refer to Appendix 1 for details) and be responsible for its authenticity.

Scholarship Amount:

(1) Liberal Arts, Economics and Managerial Science Majors: RMB 56,000 yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB 26,000 yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000 yuan/person/academic year)

(2) Science and Engineering Majors: RMB 63,800 yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB 33,800 yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000 yuan/person/academic year)

(3) Medical Science Majors: RMB 78,000 yuan/person/academic year (including tuition fee RMB 48,000 yuan/person/academic year and living allowance RMB 30,000 yuan/person/academic year)                                
The tuition fee in the scholarship will be deducted directly; thus the scholarship recipient won’t have to pay for the tuition fee. Accommodation fee and comprehensive insurance for international students will be deducted from the living allowance in the scholarship, and the remaining amount will be transferred to the individual bank account of the recipient every month after enrolment and registration. However, the recipient shall be responsible for the fees of visa application, round-trip air tickets and physical
